Portugal education minister warns schools to release exam results by Friday amid hundreds of ungraded tests

The Minister of Education in Portugal, Fernando Alexandre, has stated that schools are obligated to release the results of national exams to students by the end of the day on Friday, July 17, 2026. However, he admits that hundreds of exams will not have grades due to various issues, including delays in sending exams by schools.
In an interview with SIC, Fernando Alexandre explained that some of the issues with ungraded exams are due to delays in sending the exams by schools. He stated, "There are hundreds of exams where there are issues. The issues are varied. I'll give you examples of exams that arrived at Educa in the last few weeks, including last week, meaning they were not delivered on time by the school." He added that these exams might not have the conditions to be graded now due to concerns about the integrity of the process.
The Minister also warned that he would seek justifications from school directors if there are delays in releasing the results. He said, "Today is a day that schools know the results were coming. The directors have that responsibility, they also have the responsibility to prepare the teams. I spoke with many directors during the day, and they all conveyed the message that they were at the service of the public school, at the service of the students. I would have a hard time understanding, as would families and students, that because the results arrived at 7:30 PM, they wouldn't be released. It can happen, but I will need justification from the director, and it will be requested individually from each one if it happens."
The delay in releasing exam results has caused anxiety and frustration among students and parents. According to reports, some students have received a "suspended" notation on their report cards due to missing items in their exams. The President of Portugal has expressed understanding for the students, parents, and teachers affected by the situation.
The national exams in Portugal are crucial for students applying to higher education. The process of grading these exams has faced challenges this year, with issues ranging from delays in sending exams to problems with the integrity of the exams themselves. The Minister of Education has emphasized that the situation is not normal and that schools need to take extra responsibility to ensure that results are released on time.
The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has criticized the lack of responses from the Minister of Education regarding the suspended exam results. The party has called for more transparency and accountability in the process of releasing exam results.
In addition to the delays in releasing exam results, there have been reports of other issues affecting the education system in Portugal. For example, there have been concerns about the quality of exam questions and the impact on students' mental health. However, these issues are not directly related to the current situation with the delayed exam results.
The Minister of Education has emphasized that the situation is being taken seriously and that steps are being taken to address the issues. He has also expressed confidence that the majority of schools will be able to release the results on time, despite the challenges.
Overall, the situation with the delayed exam results highlights the importance of ensuring that the process of grading and releasing exam results is efficient and transparent. The Minister of Education has acknowledged the challenges and has committed to working with schools to address the issues and ensure that students receive their results in a timely manner.
