Eight killed, dozens missing as landslide buries homes in western China

At least eight people have been killed and 34 others are missing after a landslide struck Pengshui county in western China on Friday morning, authorities said. The disaster occurred around 9:10 am local time when a mountain collapse buried more than ten residential buildings along a residential road, trapping people inside.
Rescue operations are underway with more than 800 rescuers deployed to the site, according to Chinese state media. Ten people have been rescued so far and are out of danger, officials said. The landslide also caused power outages after debris brought down three electricity pylons, and more than 1,100 people have been evacuated from the area.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a senior central government representative to oversee the cleanup operation and demanded an investigation into the cause of the disaster, state television reported. Residents had noticed falling rocks shortly before the collapse and had begun evacuating 60 people when the landslide struck, according to state media.
Footage broadcast by Chinese state television showed a hillside that had broken away along a residential road and residents fleeing a cloud of dust. The area where the landslide occurred is known for its unpredictable steep terrain, a local official told a news conference.
The Chinese government has allocated 50 million yuan ($7.36 million) in natural disaster relief funds to support rescue and relief operations and assist affected residents, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management said.
Landslides are common in China, particularly during the rainy summer months. Last week, 21 people died in a landslide in the northwestern province of Gansu, near the city of Longnan.
The landslide in Pengshui county, located southeast of Chongqing and bordering the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou, has disrupted water, electricity, and gas supplies within a one-kilometer radius of the disaster site, state media reported. Authorities have sent more than 8,000 disaster relief items, including tents, folding beds, and family emergency kits, to the affected area.
The cause of the landslide remains unclear, and President Xi has called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause and draw lessons from the disaster, according to state media reports.
