Israeli troops kill seven-month-old Palestinian baby in West Bank shooting
Israeli troops shot dead a seven-month-old Palestinian baby in the occupied West Bank on Friday after opening fire on a family car that had complied with a halt order, according to multiple reports and the infant’s father.
Sam Fahd Abu Haikal was in his mother’s arms when a bullet fired by Israeli soldiers tore through the windshield of the family’s car in the Tel Rumeida district of Hebron, his father Fahed Abu Haikal told *Haaretz* . The infant was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died shortly after. His parents were also wounded in the shooting and remain in hospital.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that civilians had been killed and said it was investigating the incident, which has drawn global attention. A statement from the IDF did not dispute the family’s account that the car had stopped on command before the shooting .
The killing occurred amid a surge in violence across the region. In southern Lebanon, the IDF said it had struck 150 Hezbollah-linked sites over two days, while Hezbollah claimed to have downed an Israeli drone in the village of Jarjouaa . Two Israeli soldiers were killed in separate Hezbollah attacks at the weekend, according to war monitors .
In Gaza, an Israeli strike on a tent camp in Gaza City killed several Palestinians, Al Jazeera reported . Meanwhile, Israeli settlers, accompanied by at least one soldier, carried out a violent raid on the Palestinian village of Hawara, injuring nine people .
The killing of the baby has prompted condemnation from human rights groups and calls for an independent investigation. Palestinian officials described the shooting as part of a broader pattern of violence against civilians in the West Bank. The IDF’s internal probe is expected to examine whether the soldiers followed open-fire regulations and whether the use of live ammunition was justified in a situation involving a family vehicle that had stopped.
Sam Fahd Abu Haikal’s funeral took place in Hebron on Saturday, with mourners carrying his small white coffin through the streets. His father, still recovering from his injuries, told reporters that his son had been an innocent victim of a conflict that shows no sign of abating.
