Germanys electric car share in new registrations hits 24.8% in first half of 2026, led by Rheinland-Pfalz
Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity in Germany, with significant regional differences in adoption rates, according to data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamtes (KBA).
In the first half of 2026, the share of pure electric cars (BEVs) in new car registrations varied widely across German states. Rheinland-Pfalz led with nearly 30%, followed by Schleswig-Holstein with just over 29%. Baden-Württemberg came in third with about 28%. On the other end of the spectrum, Hamburg and Sachsen-Anhalt had the lowest adoption rates, with 16% and just over 18%, respectively .
Nationwide, the share of pure electric cars in new registrations rose to 24.8% in the first half of 2026, up from 19.1% in the entire year of 2025. Factors contributing to this increase include an improved range of models, new federal incentives, and high prices for gasoline and diesel .
In Baden-Württemberg, the share of pure electric cars in new registrations reached 28.3% from January to June 2026, up from 21% in 2025. The state has seen a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles, with a total of 57,700 new registrations in this period .
Meanwhile, Volkswagen has unveiled a new electric vehicle, the ID.Cross, which is set to hit the market in the fall. The ID.Cross is based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) and features a more upright SUV silhouette, offering more interior space. It will be available with two battery options: a 37 kWh battery with a range of up to 316 kilometers and a 52 kWh battery with a range of up to 427 kilometers. Prices for the ID.Cross start at 27,995 euros .
In Bayern, the share of electric vehicles in new registrations increased to 23.6% in the first half of 2026, up from 18.6% in 2025. Despite this increase, Bayern remains below the national average and ranks 10th among German states .
