**Marcia Lucas, Oscar-winning editor of *Star Wars* and key collaborator on Martin Scorsese’s films, dies at 80.**

Marcia Lucas, the pioneering film editor whose work shaped *Star Wars* and *Taxi Driver*, died on Wednesday from metastatic cancer, her attorney confirmed to the Associated Press. She was 80. Lucas, who won an Academy Award for editing *Star Wars* (1977), was instrumental in refining the narrative arcs of iconic characters in [George Lucas’s](en.wikipedia.org) original trilogy, according to Slovak outlet *Aktuality* . Her influence extended beyond *Star Wars*; she also worked on Martin Scorsese’s *Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore* (1974) and *Taxi Driver* (1976), contributing to the visual and emotional rhythm of New Hollywood cinema.

Married to George Lucas from 1969 to 1983, Marcia Lucas was part of a generation of female editors who redefined filmmaking in the 1970s. Her death coincides with the 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth, though the two figures share no direct connection beyond their enduring legacies in Hollywood. Monroe’s centennial, marked today, has sparked global retrospectives, including a Los Angeles exhibition at the Academy Museum showcasing her iconic wardrobe .

While Monroe’s image remains a commercial juggernaut—with U.S. company Authentic Brands Group capitalizing on her intellectual property rights Marcia Lucas’s contributions were often overshadowed by her ex-husband’s fame. Critics and historians, however, credit her with humanizing *Star Wars*’ characters, particularly Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, through her editing choices. Austrian outlet *ORF* noted her role in challenging Hollywood’s gender norms, a parallel to Monroe’s own struggles against typecasting .

Lucas’s death leaves a void in film history, but her work endures in the DNA of modern cinema. As Monroe’s centennial reignites debates about legacy and exploitation, Lucas’s story underscores the unsung labor behind Hollywood’s most mythic creations.

Think dance classes terrify you? Try taking four in a weekend Most of us loved dancing when we were kids. I dip my toe in at Melbournes Rising festival and rediscover that simple, pure joyAs I wait for my first Cuban salsa class to begin, I have the distinct feeling that I am poorly prepared. Im wearing heavy jeans, a bulky woollen sweater and boots. I have never done a dance class in my life – or any kind of exercise class. I dont know anything about salsa, Cuban or otherwise. Standing alone, I notice that everyone has come with at least one friend, and begin to suspect that it takes two to Cuban salsa. Theres no time to find out – the class is starting. This year, Rising festival – Melbournes winter arts offering – has consolidated its longstanding dance focus into a mini-festival: the inaugural Australian Dance Biennale, showcasing Australian and international work. Theres also a series of dance classes, romantically titled The Land of 1000 Dances, held in the romantically decrepit Flinders Street Ballroom. Running daily until 7 June, with classes costing $29 a pop, the diverse schedule includes Afro-fusion, ballroom, voguing, waltz and K-pop for teens and tweens. Continue reading...

Audience member takes over from sick keyboardist at Sydney La La Land concert – video At Saturday nights performance of La La Land in Concert in Sydney, 21-year-old Sterling Nasa took the stage after Oscar-winning composer and conductor Justin Hurwitz asked if there was an amazing sight reader in the audience. Addressing the 2,000-strong audience, Horowitz made the call-out after the orchestras lead keyboardist fell ill and had to leave during interval. Nasa suddenly found himself sitting at a keyboard he had never played before – a celeste – staring down a complex score he had never rehearsed, including an intricate synthesiser solo Continue reading...

Live From Europe
