The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) today honours 15 Slovak hockey legends in a ceremony marking their lifetime contributions to the sport. Among them, former national team goalkeeper Zuzana Tomčíková becomes the first woman to receive the IIHF’s prestigious award for her pioneering role in Slovak hockey, officials confirm.

The group of 15 includes players, coaches, and administrators who shaped Slovakia’s hockey history, though the IIHF has not yet released the full list of honourees. Tomčíková, a two-time Olympian (2010, 2014) and three-time World Championship participant, is recognised for her leadership as a player and later as a mentor to younger athletes, according to the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation .

The ceremony, held in Bratislava, coincides with the IIHF’s annual congress, where officials are also reviewing global hockey development initiatives. Slovakia’s hockey federation president Milan Hulena called the recognition "a long-overdue tribute to those who built the foundation of our national team’s success," including its 2002 World Championship gold medal.

While the IIHF has not specified the exact criteria for this year’s honours, past recipients have included players inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame. Slovakia’s hockey program, which gained independence in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, has since produced NHL stars like Marián Hossa and Zdeno Chára, though neither is named in today’s announcement. The federation hints that future ceremonies may expand the list of honourees.
