Hidroelectrica, Romania’s largest electricity producer, has signed a contract to modernize the Râul Mare Retezat Hydroelectric Power Plant with an investment of nearly €190 million. The project aims to upgrade and improve the efficiency of the plant’s production capacities, reinforcing Hidroelectrica’s role as a key player in Romania’s hydroelectric energy sector .
Separately, Romania’s Iron Gates I (Porțile de Fier I) hydroelectric and navigation system, operational since 1972, remains the country’s most significant hydroelectric producer, with an installed capacity of over 2,200 MW. The project has played a major role in transforming the Danube region .
