A brazen daylight robbery in Corbeanca, Ilfov County, has left a 52-year-old Italian national out of pocket to the tune of €2 million after a father and daughter allegedly broke into his home on Thursday night, police confirmed today. The suspects, aged 48 and 24, were taken into custody on Friday morning and are being held at the local police station while investigators piece together the sequence of events.
According to the victim’s statement filed at 08:45 on Friday, 26 June 2026, the pair entered the detached villa in the Strada Florilor district between 22:30 and 23:00 on Thursday, 25 June. They allegedly made off with luxury timepieces, high-end laptops, smartphones, jewellery and €85,000 in cash, all of which has been valued at approximately €2 million by prosecutors. Police divers and K-9 units recovered goods estimated at €1 million from a nearby wooded area on Friday afternoon, including several watches and a laptop, but the bulk of the haul remains missing.
“This was a meticulously planned operation,” said Inspector Mihai Dinu of the Ilfov County Police Inspectorate. “The suspects are known to the authorities for low-level burglaries, but this is the first time they have targeted a foreign national on this scale.” The two are being investigated for aggravated burglary under Article 229 of the Romanian Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment.
Neighbours told local media that the villa had been under renovation for weeks, with scaffolding still visible on the eastern façade. “We heard nothing,” said 68-year-old Gheorghe Popescu, who lives 150 metres away. “The dogs didn’t even bark.” The Italian owner, a businessman who divides his time between Bucharest and Milan, had been in the country for only 48 hours before the incident.
The case echoes a parallel investigation in Limassol, Cyprus, where a 46-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were remanded in custody on Friday for allegedly stripping aluminium window frames from a holiday home and a restaurant. Police there believe the pair may have links to organised crime networks operating across the eastern Mediterranean.
Back in Romania, prosecutors are expected to request extended pre-trial detention for the Corbeanca suspects when they appear before the Ilfov Court on Monday, 30 June. Meanwhile, the Italian embassy in Bucharest has pledged consular assistance and is liaising with Europol’s stolen-goods unit to trace the recovered items across EU borders .
