Spain's tax agency warns final income declaration deadline looms in three days

The final deadline for Spain’s 2025 income tax declarations closes on Monday, 30 June 2026, the Tax Agency confirmed on Friday, leaving taxpayers with just three days to file returns that either result in a payment or a refund. The agency’s online portal remains open for both categories of filings, but declarations that generate a debit and are settled by direct debit from a Spanish bank account had to be submitted by Wednesday, 25 June 2026, to allow the five-day processing window required by banks .
Tax advisers report a last-minute surge in appointments as self-employed workers, retirees with multiple income streams and families with property sales rush to meet the deadline. “We are seeing queues at our offices in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia,” said María López, a senior partner at fiscal consultancy Goya & Asociados. “The online system is still handling the load, but anyone with complex deductions—energy-efficiency works, foreign income or cryptocurrency—should file today to avoid penalties.” The standard late-filing surcharge is 1 % of the tax due for each month of delay, capped at 15 %, plus interest at 3.75 % per annum.
The agency has published a final checklist of documents required: digital certificate or Cl@ve PIN, annual income summaries from employers (modelo 190), bank interest certificates (modelo 180), mortgage-interest certificates (modelo 104) and, for property sales, the escritura pública and IBI receipt. Taxpayers using the Renta WEB application can import most data automatically, but rental-income earners must still enter tenant details manually to comply with the transparency rules introduced in 2024.
For those expecting refunds, the agency guarantees processing within ten working days once the return is validated, provided there are no cross-checks with the social-security or property-registry databases. Refunds are paid directly to the account specified in the declaration; the Tax Agency urges filers to double-check the IBAN to avoid delays.
The final cut-off coincides with a public holiday in several autonomous communities on Monday, prompting the agency to extend telephone support until 20:00 CEST on Sunday. “We have 1,200 extra agents on standby,” said a spokesperson. “Our message is clear: file today, even if you need to amend later—amendments can be made online without penalty until the end of the year.”
