Viktor Hovland wins PGA Tour title at Meijer Classic after weather-hit final round

Viktor Hovland claimed his first PGA Tour victory of 2026 on Sunday at the Meijer Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan, securing the title by a razor-thin margin after a dramatic final round disrupted by severe weather. The Norwegian world No 3 carded a closing 65 to finish on 18-under-par, one stroke ahead of runner-up Tom Kim, who could only watch as Hovland’s bogey-free round under storm-laden skies sealed the win.
Hovland appeared destined to squander his three-shot lead when play was suspended late in the afternoon due to lightning and torrential rain. The Norwegian returned on Monday morning to complete his round, where he drained a clutch 15-foot birdie putt at the 18th to preserve his advantage. “It was completely unreal,” Hovland told reporters. “I thought I’d given it away, but the weather gave me a second chance and I made sure not to waste it.”
The victory ends a 19-month win drought for Hovland, whose last PGA Tour triumph came at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. His triumph in Michigan comes just weeks after a runner-up finish at the Canadian Open, signaling a resurgence in form ahead of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Kim, playing in his first final group, carded a closing 67 to finish at 17-under, while Xander Schauffele faded with a 72 to tie for third at 15-under.
The tournament’s weather drama extended beyond Hovland’s group, with play delayed for nearly two hours as officials evacuated the course. Only 12 players completed their third rounds on Sunday before the suspension, forcing Monday’s resumption. Despite the chaos, Hovland’s composure under pressure underscored his growing reputation as one of golf’s most clutch performers.
With the win, Hovland moves to third in the FedEx Cup standings and secures a berth in next month’s BMW Championship. The Norwegian, who turned professional in 2019, now has six career PGA Tour titles and is poised to challenge for the world No 1 ranking if he continues this form. “This one means everything,” he said. “After the tough stretches, it’s great to have a win like this to build on.”
