Frankfurt police shoot and critically injure knife attacker after fatal stabbing
Frankfurt police shot and seriously wounded a suspect after he allegedly killed a man with a sharp weapon during a domestic dispute in the city’s Nordend district on Saturday. The incident marks the first police shooting in the region this year, according to local authorities.
Officers responded to an emergency call around midday, arriving at an apartment where they encountered a violent confrontation. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was armed with a knife or similar object, police said. After failing to de-escalate the situation, an officer fired at least one shot, striking the attacker. Paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital with life-threatening injuries; his current condition is unknown.
The victim, a man whose name has not been released, died at the scene from stab wounds. Police have launched a homicide investigation, though details about the relationship between the two men and the motive for the attack remain under wraps. "The circumstances are still being clarified," a Frankfurt police spokesperson told reporters .
The shooting occurred in a densely populated residential area, prompting a temporary lockdown as forensic teams secured the scene. Neighbors described hearing loud arguments before police arrived, though no witnesses reported seeing the stabbing itself.
German police protocol permits the use of firearms when officers or others face an immediate, life-threatening danger. The incident will be reviewed by the state prosecutor’s office, as is standard procedure in cases involving police use of force. Frankfurt’s police union declined to comment pending the investigation’s outcome.
