Poland signs record 18.4bn EU defence deals in single day
Poland has signed a record 29 defence contracts worth €18.4 billion in a single day under the EU’s SAFE military funding programme, marking the largest single-day procurement in global history, according to Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The agreements, finalised on 30 May 2026, secure domestic military equipment financed through the EU’s Strategic Autonomy and European Defence (SAFE) initiative, which offers low-interest loans for defence modernisation.
The contracts, valued at 78 billion zlotys (€18.4 billion), cover a broad range of military hardware, though specific systems remain undisclosed. Poland becomes the first EU member to access SAFE funds, overcoming initial resistance from President Andrzej Duda, whose veto was bypassed by the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Officials describe the move as a direct response to heightened security threats from Russia, with Tusk’s administration framing the procurement as a critical step in bolstering NATO’s eastern flank.
The SAFE programme, launched in 2025, allows member states to borrow up to 5% of their GDP for defence investments, with Poland leveraging its full allocation. The European Commission confirmed the contracts align with SAFE’s criteria, which prioritise joint EU defence projects and interoperability. Analysts note the procurement underscores Poland’s shift from reliance on foreign suppliers—such as the U.S. and South Korea—to domestic production, accelerating its defence industrial base.
While Hungary’s parallel €16.4 billion EU funding deal, announced on 30 May, signals broader EU efforts to reconcile with member states over rule-of-law disputes, Poland’s SAFE contracts represent the first tangible outcome of the bloc’s military financing mechanism. The EU has earmarked €100 billion for SAFE through 2030, with Poland positioned as the programme’s flagship beneficiary. Further contracts from other member states are expected by year-end, though none are projected to match Poland’s scale.
