Romania launches "Life in the Countryside" program to monetize rural traditions for tourists
On July 16, 2026, Romania launched a new national program called "Viața la țară" (Life in the Countryside), which allows rural households to earn income by presenting their traditions, crafts, and local activities to tourists.
The program, introduced by Law No. 139/2026, aims to promote the cultural, traditional, and natural heritage of rural areas. It enables rural families to host visitors for a fee, showcasing agricultural activities, traditional crafts, local customs, and unique elements of their region. Unlike traditional tourist accommodations, this initiative focuses on providing authentic rural experiences to tourists.
To participate, households must register with their local mayor's office and obtain a certificate as a producer of rural activities. The registration process includes providing details about the household, the activities they plan to offer, and the conditions for visits.
The program is designed to support rural households by creating a framework for them to monetize their everyday activities and traditions. It is expected to boost rural tourism and preserve local customs and crafts.
In other events on July 16, historical milestones include the adoption of an action plan for global energy security at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg in 2006, and the sentencing of the "Tunnelgangster" in Berlin in 1996.
Additionally, various astrological predictions and horoscopes were published for the day, offering insights into the week ahead for different zodiac signs.
