Turkish police storm CHP headquarters, evict ousted leader zel in court-ordered raid
Turkish riot police stormed the Ankara headquarters of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) today, using tear gas, pepper spray, and plastic bullets to evict ousted leader Özgür Özel and enforce a court ruling reinstating his predecessor, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Officers broke through barricades erected by supporters as clouds of gas filled the building, though no injuries were reported.
The raid follows a Thursday court decision that annulled the CHP’s 2023 congress, which had elected Özel as chairman, and reinstated Kılıçdaroğlu—a move current party officials denounce as a "political operation" backed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. CHP members inside the building resisted the police incursion, shouting and hurling objects at officers, while Özel vowed to "continue the struggle" despite the eviction.
The intervention escalates a year-long legal crackdown on the CHP, which began after the 2025 arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a prominent opposition figure. The party, which won Turkey’s 2024 municipal elections, has accused Kılıçdaroğlu of deploying "mafia thugs" to seize control, deepening internal divisions. Erdoğan’s government has not commented on the raid, but analysts note the timing aligns with efforts to weaken opposition ahead of potential early elections.
