Thousands of Vespa riders from dozens of countries parade through Rome to mark scooters 80th birthday

Rome came to a standstill on Saturday as more than 10,000 Vespa riders from 48 countries paraded through the heart of the Eternal City to mark the iconic scooter’s 80th birthday, filling the streets around the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia with the unmistakable hum of 160 historic and modern models.
The three-day *Vespa Roma 2026 – 80 Years of an Icon* festival, which began on 25 June, reached its climax on Saturday with a mass ride that halted traffic and drew crowds lining the Tiber’s banks. Organisers counted participants from every continent, their brightly polished Vespas—ranging from the 1946 original to the latest Primavera—tracing the brand’s evolution from post-war necessity to global emblem of Italian style.
“It’s something special,” said AFP, noting how the scooter had moved from the silver screen—appearing in *Roman Holiday* and *La Dolce Vita*—to become a worldwide shorthand for dolce vita living. The parade’s route past the Colosseum, where riders paused for photographs, underscored the Vespa’s status as a living monument to Italy’s post-war rebirth.
Italian media reported that the event had injected an estimated €1.6 billion into the local economy as enthusiasts booked hotels, dined out and purchased memorabilia. Thousands more who could not attend followed the procession via livestreams and drone footage shared by Greek outlet *ProtoThema*, which described “thousands of scooters on Rome’s streets” and “impressive images” beside the ancient amphitheatre.
For many riders, the anniversary was personal. “The Vespa is a way of life,” wrote France 24, recalling how the scooter had carried Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn through Rome’s cobbled lanes and become synonymous with cinematic glamour. Finnish broadsheet *Helsingin Sanomat* likewise framed the gathering as a pilgrimage, noting that the scooter, born the same year as the Italian Republic, now draws devotees from Finland to Fiji.
With the festival concluding on Sunday, organisers said the global turnout had exceeded expectations, cementing the Vespa’s place not only in automotive history but in the collective imagination of mobility, design and dolce far niente.
