Indian Air Force An-32 crashes in Tamil Nadu, killing five crew members
A military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed on landing in southern India on Saturday morning, killing five people, the defence ministry said, as investigators began examining the wreckage to determine the cause of the disaster.
The twin-engine turboprop, identified by local officials as an Antonov An-32, went down shortly before 09:00 local time at the southern air base of Sulur, near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu state. “The aircraft was on a routine sortie,” the Indian Air Force said in a statement released at 10:15 IST, confirming the fatalities among the six crew members on board. One survivor, a flight engineer, was hospitalised with minor injuries.
Indian television channels broadcast footage of the smouldering wreckage on the tarmac, with rescue teams recovering the bodies under heavy police cordon. Tamil Nadu police confirmed the toll in a press briefing at 11:30 IST, adding that the runway had been closed for forensic examination. The air force has ordered a Court of Inquiry led by Air Commodore R. N. Sharma, which must submit its findings within 30 days.
International observers noted that the An-32 fleet, in service since the 1980s, has suffered at least 12 crashes since 2000, prompting repeated calls for replacement. Defence analysts in New Delhi said the accident would intensify pressure on the government to accelerate the induction of the domestically developed Hindustan-228 or foreign alternatives such as the C-295.
The crash occurred during the final approach to Sulur air base, which serves as a key logistics hub for the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and for United Nations humanitarian missions in the Indian Ocean. The air force has grounded all An-32s pending the inquiry’s interim safety recommendations.
