Russia threatens to cut Armenias energy and diamond supplies over EU bid
Russia threatens to cut off Armenia’s gas, oil, and diamond supplies if Yerevan proceeds with EU accession, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova announces. Zakharova confirms Moscow has formally warned Armenia’s government that existing trade agreements—including those governing energy and diamond deliveries—will be suspended should Armenia continue its integration with the European Union, according to statements carried by TASS, RIA Novosti, and multiple Central European outlets .
The ultimatum arrives as Armenia prepares for parliamentary elections on 20 June 2026, a vote widely seen as a referendum on the country’s geopolitical orientation. Election monitors report that security, statehood, and Armenia’s relationship with both Russia and the West dominate pre-election rhetoric in Yerevan . Officials in Yerevan have not yet responded publicly to the Russian threat.
Armenia currently imports nearly all of its natural gas from Russia under a long-term contract that expires in 2027. The country also relies on Russian refined oil products and rough diamonds for its cutting industry. Analysts estimate that a sudden suspension of these supplies could disrupt heating, transport, and local manufacturing within weeks .
