Two serious traffic accidents on Norway’s E18 motorway north of Oslo trigger massive tailbacks, as Whit Monday travel chaos grips Europe.
Norwegian police report two separate crashes on the E18 near Tønsberg and Drammen, creating queues stretching several kilometres and stranding thousands of holidaymakers returning from the Whitsun break. The first collision, involving three cars, occurred near Tønsberg around 14:30 local time, while a second incident further north near Drammen compounded delays . Authorities describe "major traffic problems" and urge drivers to seek alternative routes.
In Switzerland, the Gotthard tunnel northbound saw a 3-kilometre jam with 30-minute delays, while southbound traffic faced 1-kilometre queues. Basel-Mulhouse Airport handled 84,300 passengers over the weekend, with another 34,000 expected on Monday, and Geneva Airport recorded 210,000 travellers across the holiday . Elsewhere, a truck overturn in central Bangladesh killed at least 15 people and injured 10, highlighting the country’s persistent road safety crisis .
Norwegian officials have not released details on injuries or causes of the E18 accidents, but the incidents coincide with the annual Whit Monday exodus, which typically sees record traffic volumes. Last year, similar crashes on the E18 caused delays of up to four hours.
