The 17th major espionage trial in Austria concluded on Wednesday, 20.05.2026, with the conviction of Egisto Ott, a former official of Austria’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (BVT). Ott was found guilty of abuse of office and spying for Russia in what has been described as the largest postwar espionage case in Austria .
Ott was sentenced to four years and one month in prison by a unanimous jury verdict. The court determined that he conducted unauthorized personal inquiries and passed classified information to Russian intelligence, even after his initial suspension from the BVT. The verdict is not yet legally binding, as appeals may follow .
The case is closely linked to Jan Marsalek, the fugitive former COO of Wirecard, who is suspected of orchestrating Ott’s activities on behalf of Russian intelligence. Marsalek remains at large, and the trial has exposed significant vulnerabilities in Austria’s counterespionage measures .
