Iran escalates threats, defies US blockade as Trkiye strengthens ties with Seoul and Dhaka
Türkiye and Iran escalate tensions as Tehran defies US blockade and Ankara deepens strategic ties with Seoul and Dhaka. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared on Thursday that Tehran’s military position has “never been stronger” since the war began, warning that Iranian forces remain ready to strike Israel at any moment. “The end of the war is not in their hands, and it will never be,” Araghchi told Al-Mayadeen, adding that US attempts to neutralise Iran’s missile capabilities have failed . Meanwhile, four Iranian oil tankers loaded with crude defied a US blockade and transited the Strait of Hormuz in a single day, according to maritime monitoring firm Kpler, marking the first such event since mid-April .
The escalation comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Gulf security following Iranian drone strikes on Kuwait International Airport. Rubio met Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al‑Ahmad Al‑Sabah on Wednesday to condemn the attacks and stress the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons . The US State Department has meanwhile urged American citizens in West Asia to exercise “increased caution,” placing Bahrain, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE at Level 3—Reconsider Travel—and Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and Yemen at Level 4—Do Not Travel .
Against this backdrop, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan concluded a two-day visit to Bangladesh on Thursday, where he and his counterpart Khalilur Rahman discussed expanding bilateral trade and Ankara’s ongoing humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar . Separately, Fidan and South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, nuclear energy, defence, and technology during talks in Seoul on Wednesday .
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has meanwhile warned that Iran’s refusal to grant access to nuclear sites poses a “serious proliferation concern,” urging Tehran to cooperate “constructively” . US law continues to block Turkey’s return to the F-35 programme due to Ankara’s acquisition of Russia’s S-400 air defence system, Secretary Rubio confirmed during a congressional hearing on Wednesday .
As regional powers recalibrate alliances, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei called for national unity on Thursday, marking the 37th anniversary of Ruhollah Khomeini’s death amid intensified US-Iran tensions .
