Mother and grandmother drown saving boy in Spanish reservoir
Two women die in Spain after leaping into a reservoir to save a five-year-old boy from drowning, as emergency services confirm the child survives unharmed.
The victims—identified as the boy’s mother and grandmother—drowned on Sunday in the Venta de Baños reservoir near Palencia, northern Spain, after the child fell into the water, according to reports by *El Mundo* and *El Confidencial* . The women, both residents of Palencia’s capital, jumped in immediately but were overwhelmed by the currents. Rescue teams recovered their bodies shortly after the incident.
The boy, now in stable condition, was pulled from the water by emergency responders. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. The reservoir remains cordoned off as investigations continue into the circumstances of the accident.
Local officials have warned of the dangers posed by unsupervised water bodies, particularly in rural areas where safety measures may be lacking. The tragedy follows a similar incident in 2024, when a mother and daughter drowned in the same region while attempting to rescue a child.
