Real Madrid sign Dutch defender Dumfries from Inter Milan on four-year deal

Real Madrid on Sunday completed the signing of Dutch international defender Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, the Spanish club announced in an official statement. The transfer, activated through a €20 million release clause, brings the 30-year-old right-back to the Santiago Bernabéu on a four-year contract running until 30 June 2030. While neither club disclosed the financial terms, multiple media reports confirm the figure, which Inter had listed as Dumfries’s contractual buyout price.
Dumfries departs Milan after five seasons in which he became a fixture of the Nerazzurri’s backline. He joined Inter in 2021 from PSV Eindhoven for approximately €14 million, and over 207 appearances he scored 27 goals and provided 28 assists while helping the club win two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppe Italiane. His final campaign ended with a Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, and he leaves as the ninth Dutch player in Real Madrid’s history, following the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Clarence Seedorf.
The move arrives as Real Madrid seeks to refresh its defensive options following the injury to Dani Carvajal, who suffered a fracture to the distal phalanx of his right fifth toe. Dumfries will compete with England international Trent Alexander-Arnold for the starting berth on the right side of Carlo Ancelotti’s defence. The signing is Madrid’s fourth of the summer, following Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté, and reflects the club’s stated ambition to strengthen its squad after a trophy-less 2025–26 season.
Dumfries’s own season concluded at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he featured in every match for the Netherlands. He registered assists in victories over Sweden (5–1) and Tunisia (3–1) before the Oranje were eliminated in the round of 16 by Morocco in a penalty shootout. His World Cup performances capped a campaign in which he made 76 senior appearances for his country since his debut under Ronald Koeman at age 22.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, re-elected in June, had identified defensive reinforcement as a priority during his campaign. The club’s statement emphasised that the agreement with Inter Milan was reached directly, with Dumfries’s release clause activated in accordance with his existing contract. Inter Milan, in their own farewell message, described Dumfries’s five years as “unforgettable moments” and praised his “love and support from the fans, which always returned with determination, fighting spirit and dedication on the pitch” .
The transfer window in Europe remains open until 1 September 2026, and Dumfries’s arrival gives Real Madrid an experienced, physically robust full-back capable of contributing both defensively and in attack. His integration will be closely watched as Madrid targets a swift return to continental and domestic honours.
