Swiss authorities label Winterthur train station stabbing a terrorist attack
Swiss authorities classify the stabbing of three people at Winterthur train station as a terrorist attack. The assault, carried out by a 31-year-old Swiss-Turkish dual citizen, occurred at approximately 8:30 AM on Thursday, leaving one victim in serious condition.
Security officials confirmed the attack’s terrorist motive after eyewitnesses reported the assailant shouted *"Allahu Akbar"* during the rampage. Zurich’s security director, Mario Fehr, explicitly labeled the incident a "terrorist act," drawing parallels to a 2025 knife attack on an Orthodox Jew in Zurich-Wiedikon. The suspect, arrested shortly after the attack, was previously flagged in 2015 for disseminating ISIS propaganda, according to *The Independent* .
The victims—a 28-year-old man with leg injuries (expected to be discharged soon), a 43-year-old man with neck wounds (already released), and a 52-year-old man with a thigh stab wound (still hospitalized)—were attacked near the station’s platforms. Footage from the scene shows police cordoning off the area and halting train services as paramedics treated the wounded .
Zurich cantonal police commander Marius Weyermann identified the suspect as a resident of Winterthur, though further details about his radicalization remain under investigation. The case marks Switzerland’s second high-profile stabbing attack in 12 months, following the 2025 Zurich-Wiedikon incident also deemed terrorism. Authorities have not yet disclosed potential charges, but the attack’s classification suggests a focus on ideological violence.
