Valgren wins Giro dItalia stage 17 as Vingegaard keeps pink jersey
Michael Valgren wins the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia, striking a decisive attack in the final kilometre to claim his first Grand Tour stage victory. The 34-year-old Danish rider from EF Education-EasyPost surged ahead of a six-man breakaway in Andalo, finishing the 202 km undulating route from Cassano d’Adda under sweltering heat and sudden downpours. Valgren celebrated by displaying a lucky Pokémon chip to cameras, marking his second win of the season after a previous victory at Tirreno-Adriatico .
Jonas Vingegaard, Valgren’s compatriot, retains the pink jersey with a commanding four-minute lead over second-placed Felix Gall. The Tour de France champion cruised through the stage, maintaining his dominance in the general classification as the Giro approaches its decisive final stages . Andreas Leknessund, the Norwegian rider, narrowly missed victory, finishing second for the second time in this year’s race. The Uno-X Pro Cycling Team rider expressed frustration at launching his attack too late, leaving him three seconds behind Valgren .
Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) secured third place on the stage, climbing to ninth in the overall standings. The 17th stage, marked by gruelling conditions, saw riders battle both extreme heat and unexpected rain, testing their endurance ahead of the race’s mountainous finale .
With six stages remaining, Vingegaard’s lead appears unassailable, positioning him for his first Giro d’Italia triumph. The race now shifts toward the Alps, where the final decisive battles for stage wins and minor classifications will unfold.
