German Niklas Kaul extends lead over Estonias Rasmus Roosleht in Ratingen decathlon: Ironman Frankfurt shortened by extreme heat
Rasmus Roosleht maintained his sixth-place finish in the decathlon at the Ratingen International Meeting on Sunday, as German athlete Niklas Kaul extended his lead with a dominant discus throw. Roosleht, competing in his first major decathlon since 2023, held firm after a strong opening day where he placed fifth in the 100 metres and seventh in the long jump . Kaul, the 2022 European champion, seized the advantage with a discus throw of 48.72 metres, pushing his overall score ahead of the Estonian athlete.
The competition in Ratingen, held under clear skies, saw Roosleht drop to seventh after the first discipline of the second day, the 110 metres hurdles, but he recovered in the discus to secure his position. Kaul’s performance in the discus—where he out-threw his nearest rival by nearly two metres—cemented his lead heading into the final events of the two-day contest .
Meanwhile, the Ironman European Championships in Frankfurt were overshadowed by extreme heat, forcing organisers to shorten the race. Norwegian triathlete Casper Stornes claimed a commanding victory in stifling conditions, finishing nearly ten minutes ahead of his closest competitor. The extreme temperatures, which saw race organisers implement additional cooling measures, contributed to a lack of podium finishes for German athletes, who had been expected to challenge for medals .
Stornes’ dominance was underscored by his ability to extend his lead despite the punishing conditions, with Norwegian athletes taking both the top two spots. The race’s conclusion marked a stark contrast to the expectations of German fans, as the shortened course and oppressive heat limited opportunities for strong performances .
In other sporting news, Spain’s Máximo Quiles secured his sixth Moto3 victory of the season at the TT Assen, further solidifying his grip on the lightweight class. Meanwhile, Toulouse claimed a fourth consecutive Top 14 title in rugby, defeating Montpellier 28-20 in a final delayed by thunderstorms .
