Netherlands coach Koeman resigns after World Cup exit as KNVB condemns racism
Ronald Koeman resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national football team on Tuesday, ending his second spell in charge after the team’s disappointing Round of 16 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada . The Dutch federation, the KNVB, confirmed the decision hours after the 0–0 draw and subsequent penalty shoot-out defeat to Morocco, which marked the end of a three-year tenure that included 64 matches in charge.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday evening, Koeman, 63, said he was stepping down to spend more time with his family and reflected on a “disappointing” World Cup campaign. “It hurts that my time with Oranje ended this way,” he wrote, adding that he would consider ending his coaching career . The KNVB said in a statement that it would move quickly to appoint a successor, acknowledging the need for “some haste” in finding a replacement .
The Dutch football association also condemned the wave of online racist abuse directed at players following the defeat, calling it “unacceptable” and vowing to take action against those responsible . The incident underscored the broader challenges facing the team as it transitions to a new era.
Koeman’s departure follows a pattern of high-profile exits among World Cup coaches in 2026. In Germany, Julian Nagelsmann’s future as national team coach has also come under scrutiny after the Mannschaft’s early elimination, with former international Mats Hummels publicly calling for a change in leadership . Nagelsmann departed the United States immediately after the team’s loss to Paraguay, with reports suggesting his position is now uncertain .
The Netherlands’ next competitive fixtures are not scheduled until the UEFA Nations League in September 2026, giving the KNVB time to conduct a thorough search. Koeman, a former Barcelona and Ajax defender, had previously led the national team from 2018 to 2020 before returning in 2023. His departure leaves a vacancy at the helm of a team that, despite its rich footballing tradition, has struggled to recapture its past glory in major tournaments.
