Antonelli wins first F1 sprint at Silverstone as Hamilton finishes second
Antonelli wins Silverstone sprint ahead of Hamilton in eight-lap duel
Kimi Antonelli claimed his first Formula 1 sprint victory at Silverstone on Saturday, outduelling British home favourite Lewis Hamilton in a thrilling eight-lap duel to extend his championship lead to 43 points. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, starting from fifth on the grid, overtook Hamilton’s Ferrari on the Hangar Straight on lap eight after conserving battery energy, then held off a late challenge to finish 2.7 seconds clear of the seven-time world champion .
Antonelli’s victory in the 100-kilometre sprint—his fourth podium of the season—lifted him to 179 points in the drivers’ standings, while Hamilton’s second place moved him to 132, 47 points adrift . Mercedes teammate George Russell, winner of last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, finished fourth, keeping him 43 points behind Antonelli in the title chase .
The sprint delivered edge-of-the-seat action from the opening laps, as McLaren’s Lando Norris—starting sixth—rocketed to third by the end of the first lap before briefly displacing Antonelli for second. A three-way scrap between Norris, Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen saw positions swap repeatedly before Norris consolidated third, holding off Russell and Charles Leclerc to secure McLaren’s first sprint podium of the season . Verstappen, who lost ground on a poor start from third, limped home sixth, conceding the Red Bull’s first sub-par sprint result of the year .
Speaking after the chequered flag, Antonelli described the duel with Hamilton as “very fun” and said he had sensed an opportunity once the field settled. “When I got into overtake mode, I knew my chance was coming,” he told BBC Sport. “I got a good run out of Turn Four. He went a bit wide and I think he used boost to defend, so I waited and then used everything I had out of Turn 13 and made the move.” Hamilton, who had led from the start before being passed on lap eight, admitted he had nothing left in the tank. “It was a tough race to keep the Mercedes behind,” he said. “With the wind today, big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. I didn’t have anything left” .
Norris, the reigning world champion, reflected on a strong recovery drive that saw him climb from sixth to third. “I’m very, very happy,” he said. “Good start, good first lap—not the pace to go with these guys, but had a good battle with George. Pleasantly surprised” . Russell, meanwhile, described the Silverstone weekend as “a good fight” but conceded that Mercedes’ straight-line deficit—measured at 0.6-0.7 seconds compared with Ferrari—had cost him dearly in the closing stages .
The sprint’s top eight finishers scored points, with Antonelli collecting eight, Hamilton six, and Norris five. Nico Hülkenberg, who had thrilled British crowds with a podium finish at Silverstone last year, managed just 13th in his Audi .
Qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 17:00 local time, with the race itself set for 16:00 on Sunday . Both Antonelli and Hamilton are expected to start from the front row after their sprint performances, though Verstappen’s sixth-place finish may force Red Bull to reassess their race strategy .
