Boat capsizes near Alcatraz Island, killing one and leaving two missing in San Francisco Bay
A boat capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, resulting in one death and two people missing, according to local authorities. Sixteen people were rescued from the water.
The incident occurred around 3:30 PM local time, with the boat located about 550 meters from Alcatraz Island. The boat, which had 19 people on board, was described as a recreational vessel with three decks.
Initially, there were reports of a fire on the boat, but later statements from the fire department indicated no evidence of fire on the vessel or among the survivors. The cause of the capsizing remains unconfirmed.
The search and rescue operation is ongoing, with divers, helicopters, and 11 boats involved in the effort. San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen stated that the focus is on rescuing the missing individuals.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and hoped for a quick recovery for those affected. The Coast Guard and other agencies are continuing their search efforts.
The conditions in the bay, including whitecaps, could complicate the search, but rescuers are undeterred. The Coast Guard has deployed multiple air and surface assets as part of the rescue effort.
The boat was found largely submerged, with debris floating around it. Video footage from social media showed the boat sinking beneath the waves.
Three survivors were taken to California Pacific Medical Center Van Ness in San Francisco to treat unspecified injuries. The remaining rescued individuals were taken to a small boat harbor in San Francisco.
The dog on board the vessel also died in the incident. No children are thought to have been on the boat.
The Coast Guard and local authorities are continuing their search and rescue efforts.
