Ann Widdecombe, a former British politician and TV personality, was killed in a targeted attack at her home in Devon, counterterrorism police said on Tuesday. A 28-year-old white man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and terrorism-related offenses.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on July 9 with serious injuries. Police believe she was attacked on July 8, nearly 24 hours before her body was discovered. The suspect was arrested in South Yorkshire, more than 200 miles from the crime scene, and was initially held on suspicion of murder. However, he was later rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, told reporters that it was clear the attack was targeted. "We are still working to understand the extent of any planning or preparation, and the motivation that sits behind that attack," Taylor said. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and held government positions, including shadow home secretary. After leaving the House of Commons, she became a TV personality, appearing on shows like Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing. In recent years, she joined the far-right Reform UK party and served as its immigration and justice spokesperson until her death. She was known for her socially conservative views, including opposition to abortion and equalizing the age of consent for gay and heterosexual relationships.
The murder has sent shockwaves through British political circles, with the case now being handled by counterterrorism police. The British government is reviewing security measures for political figures in the wake of the incident.
