Starmer pledges 300m for Swedish fighter jets to Ukraine as Russia strikes Kyiv

Outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Kyiv on Thursday, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and promised continued support for Ukraine's defense against Russia. Starmer announced a £300 million fund to support the purchase of Swedish Gripen fighter jets, which are expected to be delivered in 2029 and 2030. During his visit, Zelensky awarded Starmer the Order of Freedom for his contributions to UK-Ukraine relations.
Meanwhile, Russia launched ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, killing at least two people and injuring six others. The attacks came as Ukraine expanded its drone campaign in the Black Sea, targeting Russian vessels. The Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Navy, struck two tankers, the Louise 1 and Banda, which are part of Russia's "shadow fleet".
The European Union and Ukraine are aiming to strengthen their defense cooperation with a new partnership for weapons production as the war with Russia continues. Poland is considering joining a new anti-ballistic missile coalition with Ukraine.
Ukrainian oligarch Vadim Ermolaiev accused Ukrainian secret services of an assassination attempt in Monaco. Ermolaiev claimed that officers from Ukraine's military intelligence service were involved in the attack.
Starmer's visit to Kyiv is his final major statement of support for Ukraine before stepping down as prime minister. The UK has provided military aid and political support to Ukraine since Russia's invasion.
The EU-Ukraine defense deal aims to increase weapons production and cooperation between European defense industries and Ukraine. Poland has provided military aid and political support to Ukraine.
