Petr Popelka will become the next Generalmusikdirektor of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, succeeding Vladimir Jurowski in 2029. The 38-year-old Czech conductor, currently at the helm of the Wiener Symphoniker, signed a multi-year contract that runs until the summer of 2035, the Bavarian state ministry of arts announced on Wednesday. Popelka, who takes up the post at the start of the 2029–30 season, will be the youngest GMD in the company’s history and the first from Central Europe since Rafael Kubelík left in 1961.
The appointment caps a rapid ascent that began with Popelka’s 2018 debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Leoš Janáček’s *The Makropulos Affair*. Critics noted his “precise, transparent sound” and “natural rapport with the orchestra,” qualities that persuaded state arts minister Markus Blume to back him despite Popelka’s relatively low international profile. “We are not looking for a brand,” Blume told the *Tagesspiegel*, “we are looking for a partner who can grow with the house.” The orchestra’s chairman, Andreas Kern, echoed the sentiment: “Petr listens, learns, and leads—exactly what we need.”
Popelka’s departure from Vienna, where he has led the Wiener Symphoniker since 2020, is timed to coincide with the end of his current contract. The orchestra issued a joint statement with the conductor expressing mutual gratitude and a desire to remain “connected,” though no formal collaboration was announced. In an interview with *Der Standard*, Popelka described the Munich offer as “a vote of confidence in a younger generation of conductors” and insisted he would bring “fresh energy” to a house still recovering from the turbulence surrounding Markus Hinterhäuser’s abrupt exit in 2023.
Reaction in Munich has been cautiously optimistic. The *Welt* observed that Popelka “has not yet carved out a distinctive profile,” yet his collegial manner and the absence of recent scandals make him a safer bet than some high-profile rivals. The Bavarian parliament’s budget committee is expected to ratify the appointment next month, securing Popelka’s position before the summer break.
Popelka will conduct his first Munich concert in the 2029–30 season, leading a new production of Richard Wagner’s *Lohengrin*. He plans to divide his time between Munich and Vienna, maintaining ties with both ensembles. “Music is a dialogue,” he told the *Tagesspiegel*. “I want to keep that dialogue open.”
