Markta Vondrousova banned for four years after refusing doping test

Markéta Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has been handed a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after refusing to submit to an out-of-competition doping test in December 2025, a decision the Czech star attributed to fear and personal distress but which the governing body dismissed as unjustified.
The ITIA confirmed on Monday that Vondrousova, 27, will be ineligible until at least December 2029, effectively ending her competitive career at a pivotal moment. The ban matches the sanction applied for a positive test, underscoring the ITIA’s zero-tolerance stance on doping violations, whether through substance use or procedural refusal.
Vondrousova’s legal team had argued that her absence from a December 2025 test stemmed from acute anxiety and a perceived lack of safety at her residence, conditions exacerbated by private struggles. However, the ITIA found her explanation insufficient, stating that procedural obligations under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme supersede individual concerns about testing environments.
Since January 2026, Vondrousova has not competed in any sanctioned events, a hiatus now formalised by the ban. Her Wimbledon triumph in 2023 remains her career-defining achievement, but the suspension erases any chance of defending that title or pursuing future Grand Slam success. The ITIA has not indicated leniency, and Vondrousova retains the right to appeal within the prescribed timeframe.
The case adds to a growing list of high-profile doping controversies in tennis, where procedural breaches are treated with the same severity as positive tests. While Vondrousova’s representatives have framed her refusal as a mental health issue, the ITIA’s decision signals that athletes must navigate testing protocols regardless of personal circumstances. The ruling arrives as the sport grapples with broader integrity challenges, including recent allegations against other athletes.
