Simone Biles, the seven-time Olympic gymnastics champion, revealed on social media on Friday that she came “within inches of death” this week, describing the ordeal as the most terrifying experience of her life. The 29-year-old American posted hospital photographs on Instagram without specifying the medical emergency, but said she had been “a step away from death” and called the episode “the scariest thing I’ve ever been through” .
Biles, who already holds 11 Olympic medals and 30 world titles, has not disclosed the nature of the emergency, but the posts show her receiving intravenous therapy in a hospital bed. “It wasn’t in my plans at the start of the week,” she wrote in Portuguese on Saturday, sharing a photo of herself in a hospital gown . French and Spanish outlets likewise reported her statement that the episode was “the most frightening experience of my life” .
The gymnast’s representatives have not responded to requests for further details, and Biles herself has not elaborated beyond the social-media posts. Team USA and the International Gymnastics Federation have yet to comment. The episode comes less than a year after Biles returned from the 2024 Paris Olympics with two gold medals and one silver, cementing her status as the most decorated gymnast in history.
Medical experts note that sudden, unexplained hospitalisations of elite athletes often involve cardiac arrhythmias, pulmonary embolisms, or severe dehydration. Whatever the cause, Biles’s disclosure has already triggered an outpouring of support from fans and fellow Olympians. “We’re all just glad you’re here,” wrote US swimmer Katie Ledecky on Instagram. Biles, who has been open about her mental-health journey, has not indicated whether the scare is connected to past struggles. Her last public health disclosure was in 2021, when she withdrew from several Olympic events citing mental-health concerns.
