Meta abruptly pulled its new AI image-generation tool for Instagram on Friday after a global backlash over privacy and consent, marking one of the fastest retractions in the company’s history. The feature, called Muse Image, had been available for just three days before Meta disabled it, citing “feedback that this function missed the mark.” The decision followed urgent calls from the US actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and high-profile users to shut it down, with the union declaring the move a “win” for protecting performers’ likenesses.

Muse Image allowed users of Meta’s AI chatbot to generate or alter images by tagging public Instagram accounts, effectively turning any public profile into raw material for AI creations without explicit consent. The tool was enabled by default, meaning anyone with a public account could have their likeness used without notice. SAG-AFTRA condemned the automatic opt-in as “an utter miscalculation of public sentiment” and urged members and all Instagram users to disable the feature manually. The union’s president, Gabrielle Carteris, said the reversal was “a necessary step to prevent exploitation of performers’ images.”

Privacy advocates also condemned the tool. London-based Privacy International told the BBC it exemplified how AI companies treat people’s images and data as “raw material to be exploited.” The charity added that the feature’s removal was a rare acknowledgment of public concern, though it questioned whether Meta’s broader AI ambitions would continue to prioritize corporate interests over user rights.

Meta acknowledged the backlash in a statement released Friday, saying it had “heard the feedback” and that the tool was “no longer available.” The company insisted its intent was to provide a “useful creative tool” while giving users control over whether their public content could be referenced. However, the rapid rollback underscored the fragility of Meta’s AI initiatives when faced with coordinated opposition. Just days earlier, Meta had positioned Muse Image as a competitive response to rivals like Google and OpenAI, framing it as a breakthrough in AI image generation.

The controversy comes amid broader scrutiny of AI-generated content across social platforms. On the same day, Reuters reported that Meta’s own AI image detector failed to identify some of its cropped AI images, raising further questions about the reliability of the company’s safeguards. Meanwhile, OpenAI launched its most advanced model, GPT-5.6, following a brief delay over national security concerns, highlighting the accelerating race among tech giants to dominate AI capabilities.

Meta has not indicated whether it will reintroduce Muse Image in a revised form or expand similar features to WhatsApp, Facebook, or Messenger, where AI integrations were also planned. For now, the company’s retreat signals a cautious pause in its AI ambitions, at least until clearer consent frameworks and stronger privacy protections can be implemented. The episode serves as a cautionary tale for the industry: even in an era of rapid AI innovation, public trust remains a non-negotiable prerequisite for adoption.
