Western allies meet in Paris to discuss Ukraine missile defense and security guarantees

The Coalition of the Willing, a group of Western countries supporting Ukraine, is meeting in Paris today to discuss missile defense and possible joint military exercises. The talks are being led by France and the UK, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed to attend. The meeting comes at a crucial time as Ukraine continues to defend against Russian aggression, now in its fifth year.
The discussions in Paris are expected to focus on security guarantees for Ukraine and further support for the country. The Coalition of the Willing, comprising over 35 countries, has been working to end the conflict and has previously agreed to provide Ukraine with legally binding assurances of support in the event of a renewed Russian attack.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze, during her visit to the U.S., discussed the summit with U.S. officials, emphasizing the importance of the U.S. military presence in the Baltics and joint efforts to strengthen NATO deterrence capabilities. The summit is expected to address the security situation in the Baltic region and the ongoing support for Ukraine.
The meeting in Paris and the upcoming NATO summit come at a time when Ukraine is undergoing significant political changes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced a major reshuffle of the country's government, proposing the replacement of the prime minister and the heads of some law enforcement agencies. This reshuffle is seen as an effort to streamline the government's response to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
In addition to the military and political discussions, the Coalition of the Willing is also expected to address the framework for a multinational force intended to serve as a deterrent and to support the Ukrainian armed forces in peacetime. This includes training young soldiers and securing airspace and maritime areas.
The meeting in Paris is a significant step in the ongoing international effort to support Ukraine and deter further Russian aggression. As the conflict enters its fifth year, the international community continues to show solidarity with Ukraine, with the Coalition of the Willing playing a crucial role in coordinating support and ensuring the country's security.
The discussions in Paris and the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara highlight the continued commitment of Western countries to supporting Ukraine and maintaining regional security in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
