Detained Gaza hospital director faces life-threatening abuse in Israeli prison

A Gaza doctor detained by Israel since December 2024 has told his lawyer this is the last time they will see each other, Amnesty International said on Tuesday, as reports emerged that he has been hospitalised in unknown circumstances. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a paediatrician, was seized without charge or trial on 27 December 2024 and has been held ever since, according to legal testimony cited by the human rights group. His lawyer met him recently and was told the message directly, the organisation said.
The Israeli authorities have not disclosed any reason for Dr. Abu Safiya’s continued detention or his current hospitalisation. Amnesty International has called for his immediate and unconditional release, warning that his treatment may amount to enforced disappearance. “The fact that Dr. Abu Safiya’s family and lawyer have been kept in the dark about his whereabouts and wellbeing for over 18 months is a grave violation of international law,” said an Amnesty spokesperson. The group has documented at least 150 cases of Palestinians held without charge or trial by Israel since 7 October 2023, including doctors, journalists, and human rights defenders.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s detention follows a pattern of systematic arrests targeting health workers in Gaza. In May 2024, the World Health Organization reported that at least 300 medical personnel had been detained since the start of the conflict, with many subjected to ill-treatment and denial of medical care. The Israeli military has not responded to requests for comment on Dr. Abu Safiya’s case or the circumstances of his hospitalisation.
The news comes amid escalating international pressure on Israel over its treatment of Palestinian detainees. On 3 July 2026, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling for an independent investigation into allegations of torture and enforced disappearances in Israeli detention facilities. The resolution, which passed with 28 votes in favour, six against, and 13 abstentions, specifically referenced reports of medical professionals being targeted.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s case has drawn particular attention because of his prominence in Gaza’s health sector. Before his detention, he worked at Al-Shifa Hospital, which was repeatedly raided by Israeli forces during the 2023–2024 offensive. Colleagues who fled Gaza have described how Israeli soldiers systematically dismantled medical infrastructure and arrested staff, often without explanation. “They took anyone in a white coat,” said Dr. Layla al-Masri, a former colleague now in Egypt. “They didn’t care if you were treating children or running a blood bank. If you were a doctor, you were a target.”
Amnesty International has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene immediately to secure Dr. Abu Safiya’s access to independent medical care and legal representation. The organisation also called on the European Union and the United States to condition military aid to Israel on compliance with international humanitarian law. “The silence of Western governments is complicity,” said the Amnesty spokesperson. “Every day that passes without action is another day that Dr. Abu Safiya is at risk of irreparable harm.”
The Israeli government has not indicated whether Dr. Abu Safiya will face charges or be released. His family, based in northern Gaza, has not been allowed to visit him or receive any official information about his condition.
