Ukrainian woman suspected in Monaco bombing found shot dead near Kyiv
Interpol issues Red Notice for Ukrainian woman in Monaco parcel bombing
Monaco issues international arrest warrant for Ukrainian woman in parcel bombing
A Ukrainian woman suspected of carrying out a parcel bomb attack in Monaco last week that seriously injured a Ukrainian-born businessman has been found shot dead near Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday. The body of 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska, who was wanted by Interpol for the June 29 bombing, was discovered with gunshot wounds to the head in a forest in the Kyiv region late on Monday, the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement on Telegram.
Two men have been detained on suspicion of killing Berezovska, including a serving officer in Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR) and a former police officer, the statement said. The HUR officer confessed to killing Berezovska with the other defendant, the prosecutor general’s office said. “He also said that he had not informed his superiors about his contacts with Berezovska, the money transfers, or any of his other actions, and had acted on his own initiative,” the statement said. The two men were arrested on suspicion of murder and are also believed to be involved in the Monaco bombing, the statement added.
During a search of the former law enforcement officer’s home, investigators found a basement room “resembling a torture chamber,” the prosecutor general’s office said. The room contained axes, a pickaxe, tarpaulin, and a large bag, along with what appeared to be small bloodstains on a mat. The prosecutor general’s office said there was “no evidence” the room was connected to Berezovska’s killing and that it “simply reflect[s] the profile of one of the suspects.”
Berezovska was identified by Monaco prosecutors as the suspect in the June 29 attack that wounded Vadym Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian-born Cypriot citizen who had faced sanctions from Kyiv since 2023 over alleged business activities in Russian-occupied Crimea. Yermolaiev, his partner, and his 13-year-old son were injured in the explosion, which Prince Albert II of Monaco described as “an odious act.” Berezovska was initially thought to have fled Monaco on foot into France, then traveled by car through Italy and other countries to Germany, where authorities confirmed she had rented an apartment in Frankfurt.
Ukrainian authorities said Berezovska returned to Ukraine on July 1, two days after the attack. She communicated with her family and the two detained men, who made repeated transfers to her crypto and bank accounts, the prosecutor general’s office said. The HUR officer, who has not been named, told investigators he acted alone in ordering Berezovska’s killing, according to the SBU.
The revelations come as Ukraine seeks to reassure Western allies of its commitment to rule of law amid a NATO summit in Washington, where President Volodymyr Zelensky is pressing for continued support in the war against Russia. The case has raised fresh questions about the involvement of Ukrainian state actors in transnational violence, with Monaco’s deputy prosecutor Morgan Raymond saying Berezovska had spent days casing out Yermolaiev’s residence and was “disguised as a man” during the attack.
Interpol had issued a Red Notice for Berezovska on July 3, following the bombing that shocked the tax haven of Monaco. The investigation remains ongoing, with the personal involvement of HUR director Oleg Ivashchenko, the SBU said.
