Ukraines Zelensky replaces prime minister in major government reshuffle

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday a major government reshuffle, including the replacement of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, as part of a broader strategy to align the government with updated political priorities.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky expressed gratitude for Svyrydenko's work and offered her a new position focused on relations with a key international partner. "I am grateful to Yuliia for her clear, steady, and effective work as Prime Minister, for her years of productive service on Ukraine's team, and I have offered her the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner," Zelensky wrote.
The reshuffle is intended to implement an "updated political strategy," Zelensky said, without providing further details. He added that responsibility for key areas of foreign policy would be assigned to officials with relevant experience.
Svyrydenko, who became prime minister in July 2025, replacing Denys Shmyhal, has played a crucial role in Ukraine's economic policy and negotiations with international partners. Earlier this year, she signed a US-Ukraine minerals agreement on behalf of the Ukrainian government after months of negotiations between Kyiv and Washington.
Zelensky did not specify Svyrydenko's new position or the name of her successor but added that there would also be changes among the heads of law enforcement agencies. Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak told Reuters that Svyrydenko was likely to take up the post of ambassador to the United States.
Under Ukrainian law, the prime minister's resignation needs parliamentary approval, and if accepted, the entire government must resign. Zelensky expressed hope that the necessary changes to the government could be approved together with parliament.
The president also emphasized the need to prepare for winter and accelerate the transformation of state-owned companies. "The preparation for the winter is an extremely important priority, and Ukraine must be ready to face any threat that could arise," Zelensky said.
Potential successors to Svyrydenko include her predecessor, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal; Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov; and Serhiy Koretskyi, head of the state energy company Naftogaz.
The reshuffle comes as Ukraine continues to face the challenges of the ongoing war with Russia, now in its fifth year. Zelensky's announcement underscores the government's focus on both domestic resilience and international cooperation as it navigates the complexities of the conflict and its aftermath.
