Zurich Airport Resumes Full Operations After Air Traffic Control Glitch
Flight operations at Zurich Airport returned to normal on Sunday morning after a technical fault at the air traffic control organisation Skyguide disrupted airspace east of Bern for several hours. No take-offs were possible between 06:45 and 07:45 CET, while landings continued until 06:45, according to Livia Caluori, spokesperson for Switzerland’s busiest airport . Capacity remained reduced to 40% at 08:00, with flights gradually resuming thereafter.
The disruption was caused by a technical fault at Skyguide, which led to the temporary closure of Swiss airspace east of Bern. The exact cause is under investigation, Skyguide announced on Sunday morning . Norwegian Air Shuttle also confirmed that its flight to Switzerland was cancelled due to radar problems in the country’s airspace .
The incident follows a similar disruption at Zurich Airport earlier in the day, when operations were halted due to unspecified issues near the Bürgenstock region. Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) reported that no flights could depart between 06:00 and 07:45, though the situation gradually normalised .
While the full extent of the disruption’s impact on passengers remains unclear, airport authorities confirmed that flights resumed in stages from 07:45. Skyguide has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the technical fault to prevent future occurrences. The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in an era of increasing air traffic and technological complexity.
