Dustin Hoffman honored with Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary film festival
Dustin Hoffman, the 88-year-old Hollywood legend, was honored with the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday, marking the opening of Europe’s oldest film festival in the Czech spa town. The festival, which runs from July 4–12, 2026, has drawn global attention not only for its star-studded awards but also for the cultural and political tensions surrounding its programming.
Hoffman, flanked by festival director Kryštof Mucha, received the award in a ceremony that recalled his six-decade career, including his iconic role in *The Graduate* and his Oscar-winning performance in *Rain Man*. “When I worked with Robert Redford, he was a 65-year-old kid,” Hoffman quipped to the audience, adding that he had arrived in Karlovy Vary to accept the honor at nearly 89. The festival’s opening night also featured a rare screening of *The Graduate*, reintroducing the 1967 classic to a new generation .
The festival’s 60th edition coincides with a broader debate over cultural neutrality. Czech Culture Minister Oto Klempíř announced he would not attend the opening ceremony, stating that the evening should belong to the films and organizers, not political disputes. His absence follows recent public backlash after he spoke at a folklore festival where hecklers drowned him out with boos and whistles .
Adding to the festival’s international flair, French actress Juliette Binoche is also being celebrated this year, with retrospectives of her work and a masterclass scheduled. The festival’s competitive slate includes 16 films from 12 countries, with the Golden Globe award ceremony set for July 12.
Beyond the awards, Karlovy Vary is offering free public screenings and cultural events across the city, allowing visitors to experience the festival atmosphere without accreditation. Local venues are hosting jazz concerts, open-air film nights, and even a pop-up cinema on the main square, ensuring that the festival’s spirit extends beyond the red carpet .
As the festival unfolds, critics and audiences alike are noting the contrast between Hoffman’s timeless appeal and the festival’s evolving role in Central Europe’s cultural landscape. With tensions over funding and artistic freedom simmering in the background, this year’s edition underscores the enduring power of cinema to provoke, entertain, and unite.
