Sinner reaches Wimbledon semi-finals as Djokovic or Auger-Aliassime await: Gauff also into last four
Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff reach Wimbledon semi-finals
Jannik Sinner will face Novak Djokovic or Felix Auger-Aliassime in Friday’s Wimbledon semi-finals after the Italian second seed defeated Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 on Centre Court under 30 °C heat.
Sinner, the 2025 champion, has now reached the last four without dropping a set in his past four matches and will next play the winner of Wednesday’s Djokovic–Auger-Aliassime quarter-final. The 24-year-old said the extreme temperatures had forced adjustments: “If it happens again, we know we’ll have to change a couple of things.”
In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff secured her first Wimbledon semi-final with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory over Jessica Pegula, becoming the youngest player to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams since Maria Sharapova. Gauff, seeded seventh, will next face either world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka or No 3 Elena Rybakina.
Naomi Osaka’s best-ever Wimbledon run ended in a 7-6, 6-4 defeat to Karolina Muchová, the Czech seventh seed who admitted to taking “a lot of pills, sprays, eyedrops” for grass allergies. Osaka, who had beaten Sabalenka in the previous round, described a disorienting sensation: “It kind of just felt like my legs were completely gone… like my legs were disconnected from the upper half of my body.”
Alexander Zverev, the 2026 French Open champion, also booked his place in the semi-finals with a 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(8-6) victory over Jiří Lehečka after a rain-interrupted start. The German, who had never previously reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals, will next face his “scary opponent” Taylor Fritz.
The All England Club’s Centre Court will stage Friday’s semi-finals under a high-pressure forecast, with temperatures expected to remain above 28 °C. Sinner, who has not lost a set since the second round, has already mathematically secured a place at the ATP Finals in Turin later this year.
