German-English opera "Die Hunnenkönigin" premieres at Germanys Nibelungen-Festspiele in Worms
The Nibelungen-Festspiele began in Worms, Germany, with the premiere of "Die Hunnenkönigin", a collaboration between German and English theater companies. The production, presented by the London-based theater company Les Enfants Terribles, features music by singer Alice Merton and is a genre-crossing spectacle of theater, dance, and music. The performance, which lasted around three hours with an intermission, was attended by over 1,400 spectators and received enthusiastic applause. Among the guests were German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Gordon Schnieder.
Pistorius commented on the themes of war and peace in the production, saying, "This is exactly the situation we are living in today. We must be prepared to defend ourselves and know that peace can be fragile if we are not willing to protect it."
The Nibelungen-Festspiele have been held since 2002 and will continue until August 2 under the direction of Nico Hofmann. The Nibelungen saga is one of Germany's favorite epics, and the festival takes place on historic ground where a key scene from the saga is set.
