A man sprayed an unknown chemical substance near an ATM in a Tokyo luxury mall this morning, injuring about 20 people. Emergency services blocked roads in the Ginza district after reports of a strong odor, according to Tokyo police and fire officials. Victims were taken away on stretchers, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening .
Separately, a World Surf League event in New Zealand was suspended after a shark or sea lion attacked Australian photographer Ed Sloane during the men’s semi-finals near Raglan. Officials activated a code red, evacuating surfers Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira on jet skis. Sloane, in stable condition, was hospitalized following the attack around 8:30 a.m. local time .
No connection has been established between the Tokyo incident and the surf attack. Investigations into both events are ongoing.
