Sony to end production of new PlayStation game discs from January 2028

Sony will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles from January 2028, the company announced on Tuesday, marking a decisive shift toward digital-only distribution. The decision, outlined in a PlayStation Blog post, reflects what Sony describes as “changing consumer preferences” and follows years in which players could purchase new games either on disc or as digital downloads. Existing disc-based titles will continue to function on compatible hardware, but all new releases after the January 2028 cutoff will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store or via download codes sold by retailers .
The move aligns with broader industry trends and comes ahead of the highly anticipated digital-only launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for later this year. Sony’s announcement was echoed across multiple outlets on 1 July 2026, with reports in Dutch, Norwegian, Russian, German, Finnish, Norwegian, Greek, Czech, French, and Danish media confirming the policy change and its January 2028 implementation sources,,,,,,,,,,,,.
Industry analysts see the move as part of a long-term consolidation of digital storefronts and cloud-based gaming services. Retailers will continue to sell new PlayStation titles after January 2028, but customers will receive download codes rather than physical discs. Collectors and players who prefer physical media have already begun to voice concerns, with some calling the decision a “significant moment” for the gaming industry and others lamenting the loss of a long-standing tradition ,.
Sony’s decision also raises questions about the secondary market for used games, which has historically relied on physical discs. While the company has not detailed plans to restrict resale of existing titles, the absence of new disc-based releases could accelerate the transition to digital ownership models across the PlayStation ecosystem.
