The death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident last July—just weeks after his wedding and a separate tragedy involving a car ploughing into title-celebrating crowds—cast a shadow over the season. The Guardian reports that the emotional toll of these events, combined with tactical missteps and a failure to replace key players, accelerated Liverpool’s collapse from champions to also-rans.
Speculation over Slot’s successor is already rife, with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola emerging as a leading candidate. The club’s statement emphasised the need for "change to keep moving forward," though no timeline for a permanent appointment has been set. Liverpool’s next fixture, a pre-season friendly in July, will be overseen by interim staff.
