Student killed in knife attack in Germany, suspect arrested after manhunt
A 22-year-old student was killed in a knife attack in Trier, Germany, on Wednesday, police said. The suspect, also 22, was arrested after a brief manhunt.
The victim was a student at the Universität Trier, and the attack occurred on Wednesday morning. The suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by police.
The Universität Trier expressed shock and sadness over the incident. "With great dismay and deep sorrow, we have learned that one of our students became the victim of a homicide on July 15, 2026," the university said in a statement. "Such an event shakes us as a university community to the core. The loss of a young person tears a painful gap in our community and leaves us speechless."
The university planned a minute of silence at noon on Thursday to honor the victim.
Police said several witnesses observed the attack, and there was no threat to the public. The motive for the attack is not yet known, and the investigation is ongoing.
In a separate incident, seven people were arrested in raids on Amsterdam's Red Light District as part of a major investigation into a pimping ring, police said on Thursday. The raids were conducted by police in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, in Japan, a nurse was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murdering an elderly patient by allegedly injecting excrement into his intravenous tube during a night shift at a hospital near Tokyo.
In Macedonia, a suspected drug dealer was arrested in Skopje after briefly fleeing from the police station in Kocani. The suspect, Aleksandar Lazarov – Cuna, was apprehended on Wednesday evening. An internal review will determine how he was able to escape from the police station. Police raided his homes and seized six luxury vehicles.
