Rijeka Gateway container terminal in Croatia marked its first year of commercial operations on Friday, reporting strong performance and new logistics partnerships.
The terminal has handled over 370,000 TEUs of cargo, received more than 100 ships, and processed over 1,000 trains and 80,000 trucks since opening, according to a press conference cited by Total Croatia News. Cargo transport is currently split between 42 percent by rail and 58 percent by road. The facility has also created a workforce of 422 employees and achieved operational standards required by the global APM Terminals network .
Rijeka Gateway has secured cooperation with Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, the world’s two largest shipping companies, both of which now use the terminal as a transshipment hub for import and export cargo from Italy. The terminal has strengthened Rijeka’s role as a regional logistics hub within the Adriatic, becoming the only terminal in the region performing such operations within the Gemini shipping network. New rail links connect Rijeka with Serbia, Hungary, Austria, and key Adriatic and Italian ports .
The terminal is described as the technologically most advanced container terminal in this part of Europe. Officials noted that its development has accelerated discussions on the lowland railway project, deemed necessary for the next phase of expansion .
