Wildfires in Washington state have forced thousands to evacuate as flames threatened nearly 4,000 structures, with Governor Bob Ferguson declaring a statewide emergency on Saturday. The Old Trails Fire in Spokane County had burned roughly 3,500 acres by Sunday, pushing into residential neighborhoods in northwest Spokane and igniting multiple homes, according to local authorities and the Spokesman-Review .
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said critical facilities, including a Veterans Affairs hospital, water treatment plants, and a waste processing center, were evacuated. By Saturday evening, around 200 homes had been cleared, though officials expected the number to rise as the fire spread . The National Guard announced it was rapidly mobilizing units to assist the city, with General Major Gent Welsh stating, “When the sun sets and rises again, we will be shocked” by the expected damage .
Across Washington, 4,000 personnel battled at least 12 major wildfires covering more than 80,900 hectares, with the Kaiser Canyon Fire in the northeast alone spanning approximately 500,000 acres, according to George Geissler, head of the state’s Forest Service . Dave Upthegrove, the state’s public lands commissioner, called the situation “not normal,” noting that Washington is enduring its fourth consecutive drought year—a first for the state . Ferguson attributed the crisis to record drought and strong winds, banning all open fires and agricultural burning through September .
Power outages affected 60,000 people in eastern Washington, according to utility provider Avista. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far, officials said . Firefighters from over 10 states have joined local crews and the National Guard in suppression efforts, authorities confirmed .
