Australia to launch gun buyback in New South Wales after Sydney mass shooting
Australia will launch a gun buyback program in New South Wales on Nov. 2, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and state Premier Chris Minns announced on Sunday. The scheme offers up to A$1,000 ($700) per firearm for weapons now prohibited under tightened laws introduced after the Dec. 14, 2025, mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
The Bondi Beach attack, during a Hanukkah celebration, left 15 people dead and dozens wounded. Police said the gunmen—a 50-year-old man and his son—used legally obtained firearms. The older attacker was killed by police, while his son, Naveed Akram, 24, remains in custody facing 15 counts of murder. Authorities believe the attack was inspired by the Islamic State group.
New South Wales has since capped firearm ownership at four guns per person, with limited exceptions for farmers. The buyback targets weapons exceeding the new limits or no longer permitted under reclassified restrictions. Minns said the program aims to remove up to 274,000 firearms from circulation, calling it the largest such effort in nearly 30 years. A second phase in early 2027 will address higher-value firearms, with compensation of up to A$10,000 ($6,100) for eligible weapons.
Albanese noted Australia now has 4.1 million registered firearms, more than at the time of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which prompted the country’s last major buyback. That attack, in which a lone gunman killed 35 people, led to sweeping bans on automatic and semi-automatic weapons. New South Wales alone accounts for over 1.1 million of the nation’s firearms.
The federal and state governments will jointly fund the program. Albanese’s government passed national gun law reforms in January, including stricter license checks and a reduced license validity period from five to two years. The buyback was first pledged days after the Bondi Beach attack but faced delays over funding and implementation.
