Greenland warns Trump-linked Texas oil firm over unauthorized drilling equipment arrival
Greenland’s government issued a “strong warning” on Friday after a Texas-based oil company linked to U.S. President Donald Trump landed drilling equipment on the island’s east coast without authorization, according to The Guardian .
Greenland Energy, a firm founded in 2025, has begun preparations for exploratory drilling in the Jameson Land Basin, where it estimates oil reserves could be worth $1 trillion. The company plans to spend $60 million on two test wells to verify the deposits, despite Greenland’s 2021 moratorium on new oil licenses for environmental reasons. A British firm, 80 Mile, already holds exploration rights in the area, and Greenland Energy aims to acquire a majority stake in the project in exchange for funding, pending government approval .
The Greenlandic government stated in a release that no permits had been granted for the equipment’s arrival. “All future logistical measures must be reported to and approved by the mineral resources authority before implementation,” the statement read .
The company’s ties to Trump include the appointment of Phil McGraw, known as Dr. Phil, to produce a documentary series about the project. McGraw, a conservative figure who served on Trump’s religious liberty commission, was brought on to “capture the mission of these modern-day prospectors,” according to corporate filings. Greenland Energy also added a U.S. Marine veteran involved in the Golden Dome missile defense program to its board; Trump has previously called control of Greenland “vital” for the system .
Larry Swets, Greenland Energy’s president and a major shareholder, denied any connection between the drilling project and Trump’s repeated threats to claim Greenland. Swets acknowledged that a company representative had “incorrectly” stated at a local meeting that approval had already been secured, attributing the error to “excitement about the project” .
On Thursday, Trump posted an image on Truth Social showing himself superimposed over a Greenlandic village with the caption “Hello Greenland,” the latest in a series of provocative statements about the territory. He had previously reaffirmed U.S. claims to the island during a July NATO summit .
Greenland Energy’s corporate documents confirm its intent to take over the Jameson Land project from 80 Mile, but the company still requires formal approval from Greenland’s mineral resources authority to proceed with drilling .
